Scholarship/Bursary Opportunities
Annually, the Optimist Club of Calgary holds the following contests with scholarship awards to the winners:
Optimist International Essay Contest
This contest is open to young people under 19 years of age. The 2008 essay topic was "�The Power of Youth�". Essays must be between 400-500 words. Closing dates for each years contest varies.
The first-place winner of the Club Essay contest is awarded a $500 cash prize and the essay is entered into the Alberta Montana Saskatchewan & Northern Wyoming District Essay Contest. The first-place winner of the District Essay Contest is awarded a $650 college scholarship and the essay is entered into the Optimist International Essay Contest. The first-second- and third-place winners of the OI contest are awarded $6000, $3750, and $2250 college scholarships, respectively.

Optimist International Oratorical Contest
Separate contests are open to boys and girls under 16 years of age on December 31, 2008. The topic this year is, �For Me, Optimism is��. Speeches must be between 4-5 minutes.
Normally, speeches must be submitted to the Optimist Club of Calgary prior to March 31, 2009. The boy and girl winners of the Club Oratorical Contests have to compete in a Zone (Southern Alberta) and/or Regional (Province of Alberta) contest to qualify for the Alberta Montana Saskatchewan & Northern Wyoming District Oratorical Contests. The first-place boy and girl winners of the District Oratorical Contests are each awarded $1500 college scholarships.
Optimist International CCDHH Contest � Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
This contest is open to young people through grade 12 who have a hearing loss of 40 decibels or more. The contest topic this year is, �For Me, Optimism is��. Presentations must be between 4-5 minutes, and can be done in sign language, orally, or using a combination of both.
Normally, presentations must be submitted to the Optimist Club of Calgary prior to March 31, 2009. The first-place winner of the Club CCDHH contest is awarded a $500 cash prize and have to compete in a Zone (Southern Alberta) and/or Regional (Province of Alberta) contest to qualify for the Alberta Montana Saskatchewan & Northern Wyoming District CCDHH Contest. The first-place winner of the District CCDHH Contest is awarded a $1500 college scholarship.
Full-time, post�secondary students in Alberta may apply for the following Student Awards setup by the Optimist Club of Calgary:
SAIT and Mt. Royal College Bursaries
Full-time students entering their third semester at either SAIT or Mt. Royal may apply directly to these institutions for Student Awards under the Optimist Club of Calgary Golden Anniversary Bursary at SAIT, or the Optimist Club of Calgary Diamond Anniversary Scholarship at Mt. Royal College. �
William J. Cummer Bursary
The Optimist Club of Calgary also has setup an Endowment Fund at The Calgary Foundation to provide scholarships to full-time students entering their final year of study in a certificate, degree or diploma program.
